MATTHIAS KUSCH SWORN IN AS NEW HAWAIʻI ISLAND REPRESENTATIVE

Honolulu, Hawaiʻi – Representative Matthias Kusch officially began his duties today as the State Representative for House District 1, which encompasses Hāmākua, a portion of Hilo, and Kaūmana.

"The House appreciates Kusch's readiness to step up and represent Hawaiʻi Island," said Speaker Scott K. Saiki. "His years of dedication as a community advocate reflect his deep commitment to his island home."

Governor Josh Green, M.D. appointed Kusch on August 30, 2024, to fill the House District 1 vacancy created upon the passing of Representative Mark M. Nakashima.

"I am honored to be selected by Governor Green and my fellow Democrats of House District 1," said Representative Matthias Kusch. "I will strive to serve the district and Hawaiʻi Island with the same integrity and diligence that Representative Mark M. Nakashima exemplified during his tenure."

Kusch brings a wealth of experience to the Legislature as a retired Hawaiʻi Fire Department Battalion Chief, with over two decades of farming expertise and a strong record of advocating for affordable housing. He also serves as President of Hilo Bayfront Trails, is a member of the Windward Planning Commission, and actively engages in various other business and volunteer initiatives.
