House Majority Leader Representative Della Au Belatti (Makiki, Tantalus, Papakōlea, McCully, Pāwaʻa, Mānoa) released the following statement today following Governor David Ige’s press conference:
“I’m pleased the Ige Administration will be launching this innovative program that will use federal CARES Act funds to synchronously support unemployed individuals in our community and reinforce our local restaurant industry. ”
“Our state is in need of creative solutions like this to reinvigorate our economy and provide much needed assistance to our residents who are currently without work. The Hawaiʻi Restaurant Card Program targets relief for both communities that have been hurting due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Governor David Ige discussed his administration’s plans for spending the remaining federal CARES Act funds which must be used by December 31. Nearly $67 million will be used for the Hawaiʻi Restaurant Card Program which provides prepaid restaurant debit cards to Hawaiʻi unemployment insurance recipients. The program is expected to launch mid-October and run through December 15, there is no need to apply and recipients will receive a preloaded, non-transferable card mailed to them in the coming weeks.
