Honolulu, Hawaiʻi – House Representative Sean Quinlan (D-47 Waialua, Hale‘iwa, Kawailoa Beach, Waimea, Sunset Beach, Waiale‘e, Kawela Bay, Kahuku, Lā‘ie, Hau‘ula, Punalu‘u, Kahana) issued the following statement:
"The City Administration's proposal to establish a landfill near Wahiawā presents a significant threat to the North Shore of Oʻahu's precious water supply. Landfills are known for leaking hazardous substances like PFAs, which could permanently contaminate nearby wells and aquifers just minutes away in Waialua. The proposed site also lies above the critical no-pass zone, jeopardizing the island's freshwater resources.
Moreover, my community is deeply concerned regarding the lack of openness in this process. Area legislators and local residents were not consulted prior to the announcement, leaving key stakeholders out of this important decision-making process.
Protecting our water supply is essential to sustaining life on this island, and this proposal does not meet that responsibility."
